The following trip report is a reprint of a couple of posts by Eric "No Gloss" Gustavson.
Mancora was excellent. Wind was good 11 out of 12 days. Mostly 9m, 13m a few days, could have used a 7m one day. Waves were head to a few feet over the first few days, then subsided to knee to waist.
Wind was like clockwork. None in the morning for surfing. Picked up daily at 11-1, done by 5.
Water was like summer on Cape. Wore everything from Trunks to 3/2. Rode 3 different point breaks, all lefts. Mancora, Cabo blancio and Lobitos. Lobitos is the spot with the oil platforms offshore that you see on the videos. Quite a contrast when you are pinching upwind on the way out and you see whales breaching and dolphin pods going by those rigs.
Mancora is side to side on, less expierenced kiters can ride just north of the point. Good shorebreak but then just rolling chop. This is where the lessons are taught. Cabo blancio is side, side off and is a little more windy consistently. Lobitos is off, side off. Clocks more off as the day goes by. The windiest spot. Longest wave.
The best season for wind and waves is sept-dec. I stayed at Samana Chakra. Great locale, the best food in town. Comfortable and friendly. There are many other choices for food, never had a bad meal. The fish is caught right there , tuna and merro? ,flaky white fish. There is a cool little hang out right in front of the break in Mancora where you could get a chicken or fish burrito with guacamole smothered for 3 bucks! Of course there was plenty of cold cervesa and excellent smoothies to wash it back.
The night life was going off the first part of my trip as the womens ASP tour was in town. The bass was thumpin till 5 am every nite. The big party coincided with my birthday ,dancing in the sand latino style and free coronas, johnie walker ,absolute till ???? Some how I rallied the next day for an epic Lobitos session. Things quieted down when the goat show left town but there was still places to go and people to see. B) Jim posted pauls blog, this is also a good link ,http://www.vivamancora.com/
One of the best parts of the trip was that I got to kite and hang with great folks from all over the world . Including Hawaii,Cali, Vancouver, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, Brazil and the UK. I met most thru "Skip", who runs Perukitecamp.com . Some of you old time Hatteras folks may know him from his restaurant in Waves, "The Downunder". He left there and went to the DR for awhile and ended up in Mancora in search of wind and waves.
